Treatment

Introduction

For my short film I want a light-hearted storyline that focus on the performance and micro elements within the film to portray chaos.

Themes

The key theme I have focused on is the chaos of food and cooking. I have been interested in how we can show the different aspects of food through, cinematography, lighting, and diegetic sounds.

My initial idea was to explore the chaos of relationships and compare this to the chaos created by the food.

I have researched other films and Tv that portray food and have been particularly interested in the tension created by cooking for example time pressure as well as using food in a satirical way.

Links to other short films

I really liked the tone created by the short film the fly which portrays tension in a comedic way. As well as this I like the use of close ups in the Ellington Kid of the preparation of e.g., the kebab meat. I also want my short film to be a similar structure to the Ellington Kid as I liked the use of narration to tell a story and revealing a slight twist at the end.

Act 1

starts off with us seeing a girl in the kitchen cooking. Close up of knife chopping onion, frying it etc. then cuts to a guy walking down the road/waiting at the bus stop. we see the boy enter greet each other etc… then cuts to them eating the spaghetti, he has a mouth and is like omg this is so good how did u make it? She answers… well basically….

Act 2

Cuts to her preparing the sauce and then realising she forgot spaghetti, while cutting back to her telling the story to the boy as they are eating. She leaves to go to the shop peacefully walking down the street. Whilst she’s gone everything goes wrong in the kitchen, something falls other to turn the heat up where the sauce is cooking, their dog jumps up to grab the food so tomatoes spill on the floor etc. while this is happening keeps cutting back to the girl listening to upbeat music completely calm, buying spaghetti and coming back from the shop. When she walks into the house and into the kitchen the fire alarm has gone off, smoke, food everywhere.

Act 3

Boy is shocked and says no way, but you still pulled it off though! Then gets up and clears his dish. Opens the bin and sees package of a delivery Cuts to zoom of inside the bin. Flashback of her ordering the Deliveroo. Cuts forward in time and get close ups of both of their reactions.

Cast

I have decided to cast Scarlett as the main protagonist in my film. I think she will bring the character to life as she is an experienced actress and can relate to the role of a young girl trying to impress a date.  I also decided to cast Daniel as the male protagonist of the film. I am good friends with both Scarlett and Daniel and know they will be reliable for filming.

Over

Over is a short film about the discovery of a body on a suburban street in London. The location is familiar to us however it contrasts to when the plot is revealed to us at the end of the film, which is alien to most people. This makes the moment when we realise what's happening (when the body falls from the sky and the story is revealed) even more shocking and thought provoking. The reverse chronology keeps the audience active in their viewership, as they have to piece together what little information they're given to establish the plot for themselves. The cinematography is often static and positions the viewer at a distance.  The film has a subtle political statement to it surrounding the desperation for those attempting to flee their countries in order to seek asylum in others. This is emphasised by the director choosing to show a photograph of the mans family in an evidence bag, which emphasises the sympathy for the man as we can see the people he is leaving behind; huma...

Slap

Slap (2015) is a drama that focuses on performance, visual motifs and cinematography to convey the important themes and messages surrounding gender and identity.  It follows the three act structure with the beginning showing us the characters and settings, and then in the middle the drama begins when the fight happens and he first shows his identity to someone and then the end being when he decides to go to the party. Throughout the film there is a visual motif of mirrors, as we often see Connors reflection possibly symbolising the conflicting identities within him. We also see this through the use of shadows, symbolising two possible selfs.  Throughout the film we see a northern industrial setting indicating that he would not be accepted as his true self due to cultural stereotypes. The film is mostly grey, contrasting to the colourful makeup he puts on. The different settings are also very masculine such as his bedroom and the boxing gym, cont...
